The Truth About Shame and Alcohol: How Jesus Covers What You Can't

If you're here, chances are you're battling not only alcohol, but also the deep shame that follows. Shame is more than guilt. Guilt says "I did something wrong." Shame says "I am something wrong." And when alcohol is involved, shame tends to go bone-deep.

What Shame Does to You

Shame drives you into hiding. It tells you that if people really knew what you've done, or what you've become, they would reject you. So you wear a mask, keep your distance, and quietly drink in the dark. Shame feeds the very addiction it claims to punish.

The Gospel Answer to Shame

The gospel doesn't minimize your sin — it covers it completely. When Christ died on the cross, He took not just your guilt but your shame. Isaiah 53 tells us that He bore our griefs and carried our sorrows. He was despised and rejected so that we would not have to be.

"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

— Romans 8:1

Cling to Christ Daily

Replace the false comfort of alcohol with the true comfort of Scripture and prayer. Preach the gospel to yourself daily. When shame whispers, answer with Romans 8:1 and the truth of Christ's covering.

The Covering You've Been Searching For

You cannot fix shame with willpower or alcohol. But Jesus can and does. When He covers you, shame loses its grip. What once defined you no longer has the final word. You are not your addiction. You are not your shame. You are covered — if you are in Christ. Take this moment to pray. Ask Him to forgive, to cover, and to free you. He delights to answer.

"Addiction is the devil’s leash. He wants you dead. Christ is stronger."
